Sentinel ILI/SARI Training Workshops in Macedonia

16 May 2014

On 16th of May 2014 in Macedonia were organized two sentinel training workshops:

• Sentinel ILI Training Workshop.

The first training workshop for sentinel ILI surveillance in Republic of Macedonia was realized in the premises of Institute of Public Health (IPH) with participation of representatives from Ministry of Health, selected sentinel ILI sites, epidemiologists from the regional Centers of Public Health (CPH) corresponding to the sentinel sites, sector for prevention and control of communicable diseases and laboratory for virology and molecular diagnostics from IPH: in total, 26 participants that will be directly involved in the process of the implementation of the sentinel ILI surveillance.

The workshop started with presentation of the routine system for surveillance of influenza by Prim Dr Gordana Kuzmanovska, Chef of the Sector for control and surveillance of Communicable diseases, IPH followed by presentation of key characteristics of sentinel ILI/ARI surveillance systems.

Sampling, storage and transport of samples for lab investigation, including the scheme of transportation and coding of each sample, were presented by Elizabeta Janceska, Msc, from the laboratory for virology and molecular diagnosis, IPH.

Dr Vladimir Mikic, from the Sector for control and surveillance of Communicable diseases, IPH, presented collection of data and reporting, epidemiological notification and lab request form for ILI/ARI and form for reporting of ILI/ARI population under surveillance. The workshop was closed after fruitful discussion. One of the proposal for the future was to connect ILI/ARI sentinel surveillance with syndrome surveillance, in terms to involve the same GPs which are already involved in EWARN system.

• Sentinel SARI Training Workshop.

There is no SARI surveillance in the Republic of Macedonia. The first training workshop for sentinel SARI surveillance in Republic of Macedonia was organized in the premises of Institute of Public Health (IPH) with participation of representatives from Ministry of, selected sentinel SARI sites and new institutions showing interest to be involved as sentinel SARI site, epidemiologists from the regional Centers of Public Health (CPH) corresponding to the sentinel sites, sector for prevention and control of communicable diseases and laboratory for virology and molecular diagnostics from IPH: in total, 23 participants who will be directly involved in the process of the implementation of the sentinel SARI surveillance.

The workshop started with comparison of routine versus sentinel system for surveillance of influenza by Prim Dr Gordana Kuzmanovska, Chef of the Sector for control and surveillance of Communicable diseases, IPH followed by presentation of key characteristics of sentinel SARI surveillance system by Dr Kristina Stavridis, Sector for control and surveillance of Communicable diseases, IPH.
